For centuries, the horse has captured the hearts and touched the souls of mankind. From the velvet soft muzzle to the strong solid hoof, horses possess a unique combination of humble strength and understated power. Horses, farm animals and the land itself are powerful catalysts for inspiration and change.
Horses are extremely effective teachers; they can teach anyone no matter what their age, background, culture, abilities or limitations. Horses teach us effective communication, problem-solving skills, healthy boundaries, leadership, trust, empathy, compromise and responsibility, while providing an environment that lowers stress and improves emotional health and well being. Horse Cents For Kids believes every child, regardless of circumstances should have access to horses and the therapeutic and life enhancing attributes they have to offer.
Horse Cents for Kids, a non-profit charitable organization in Niagara, is excited to announce the launch of a pilot after-school program for at-risk youth this spring. While participating in the after-school program, children will be offered the opportunity to enroll in a research study being conducted in collaboration with Brock University. The study aims to evaluate the benefits of animal-assisted equine activities for helping youth deal with physical and mental health challenges. Many of those in the horse industry have seen or felt these benefits. This significant and leading edge study will be the first to quantify and qualify what many horse enthusiasts have experienced.
Horse Cents for Kids will also be offering a Farm Experience Program this summer, giving children living in poverty an opportunity to learn about, interact, connect and experience horses and other farm animals. A day at the farm can be a powerful time for children to continue to draw from long after the day is gone. The connection with animals is personal and effective in nature, influencing both feelings and emotions as well as enhancing knowledge and skills. It can give hope to those in challenging life situations, empowering children in all areas of their lives.
Horse Cents for Kids can only offer these crucial programs with support from the community.
